Its name related to surf, a Swell is formed from storms in high sea. The waves propagate over great distances in the sea, and that come near the shallowest part, on the coast forming the waves crashing on a sandbank or corals. When a surfer says "swell came in" he meant that time changed in the sea and the waves began to present themselves in an ideal surf.
