NATURE AND MEN
GOLD AND PENURY
HOPE AND DROUGHT
An environment of contrasts where around one hundred thousand miners worked their way up unstable ladders, through narrow alleys and through paths marked by the gold rush that took place in southern Pará. Serra Pelada table pays homage to a small but very precious fraction of Brazil’s history, the quest for gold that shook the country during the 1980’s.
The iconic open pit of Serra Pelada served as inspiration for the sinuous base that contrasts with the straight edges of the metal feet and glass top. The result is a piece of decoration, art and history.
“Few made a fortune at Serra Pelada. As soon as the mine was shut down and claimed by nature, a sense of empty hope invaded most of the miners. We watched the pit unable to see the bottom, like the miners that stood around it. As we stared from the outside, we could see the mountain that had been dug with picks. Nothing around, inside or outside. Only a metallic structure sustained it. Metal. Could it be gold? It could have been then, but not now.”
